Hola.

Welcome to our styling blog, a carefully curated collection born from a borderline-problematic shopping addiction. Clothes, accessories, home decor - we don’t discriminate, we love it all, and we won’t stop searching until we’ve found the most unique and perfect pieces. Enjoy our current style musings!

Happy Place

Happy Place

Happy Place is an interactive pop-up exhibit that has made its way to Boston for a very short time. An instagram girl’s dream land, this multi-sensory adult play place is the home of vibrant backdrops, whimsical props, and photo-ops galore! The exhibit runs until June 2nd, and you can get tickets here or at the door (though we’d recommend booking ahead of time to get a good time slot).

Neither of us had a clue what to expect ahead of visiting (we’re serious - it took us both longer than we’d like to admit to get dressed for the festivities), so we’re sharing our top tips & tricks about how to make the most of your experience at Happy Place. Scroll through to learn everything from outfit planning to where to take the best boomerangs. Enjoy!

What to Wear

First things first, these exhibits are highly interactive, so pants are a must. You’re going to be maneuvering a colossal pair of stilettos covered in M&Ms, splishing & splashing in a bathtub, and cannonballing into an adult-sized ball pit. You’re going to want full leg coverage in order to fully participate in these activities without having to worry about showing any of your lady (or gentleman) bits.

Adding to that, the exhibits are more physical than we expected. When choosing an outfit, keep in mind that you may be jumping up and down in a pile of confetti, sprawling out across a couch shaped like a pair of lips, and flapping your arms and legs on the ground making the perfect confetti angels. During all of this excitement, you don’t want to worry about anything falling out of place, so we recommend choosing clothing that fits properly & doesn’t require constant readjustment.

Next - it gets really warm really quickly! Wear light clothing or layers you can take off between pictures to avoid overheating.

Onto colors! We weren’t exaggerating when we said Happy Place is vibrant. Picture ROYGBIV on steroids, then crank up the saturation and add a handful of wild patterns. When you’ve pictured that, you’ve basically mentally teleported to Happy Place. SO what’s the magical secret color palette? Black and white, and stuff that doesn’t clash with yellow & ROYGBIV. A solid bold color is perfect to pop against the loud, patterned backgrounds. Adrienne’s cobalt blue and Amy’s soft pink turned out to be perfect contrast colors to pretty much all of the backgrounds.

Finally, we DEFINITELY recommend wearing (or at least packing) a pair of socks, ESPECIALLY if you plan to jump into the ball pit. You’ll be asked to take your shoes off, and the balls in the pit are a bit… sticky (ew, we know. Close your eyes and DO IT FOR THE GRAM), so if you value your bare feet, you will bring socks.

Our Favorite Rooms

The “hall of stuff” was a small hallway with three different mini-rooms, including a room with shiny discs on the walls (we called it the disco room -see pics below), a room full of long white chains dangling from the ceiling, and a vibrant yellow room filled with wall-to-wall rubber duckies and a large yellow tub full of balls. We loved this part of the pop-up because it allowed us to get a lot of unique and interesting shots in a short amount of time.

The “lips” room was an open room filled with lip shaped couches and a gigantic “XO” statue. This room was especially nice because it was much larger than most of the other spaces and helped us feel like we weren’t fighting strangers for the perfect shots.

Finally, our favorite room, the confetti dome, was one of the most fun spaces and (surprisingly) had amazing lighting. One of our favorite parts about this room is that only a few people are allowed to enter the dome at a time, which basically means you get your own VIP party without having to worry about other selfie seekers crowding (or bursting) your confetti bubble.

Hot tips:

  • Gather up a few handfuls of confetti and throw them over the two fans in the dome to maximize the amount of confetti in the air

  • Be super sweet to the employee manning the door and they might let you stay in the confetti dome for a few extra turns

Where to Spend the Least Time

Don’t waste too much time in the front room. We found that people tend crowd this room in particular because it’s the first room & people aren’t quite sure if whatever is behind the next magical door will be as exciting. Take our advice: Snap a quick couple of pics on the couches under the gumballs & move on! The shoes are cute, but they’re awkward to pose with and the pictures didn’t turn out that great. we promise there are PLENTY of other exciting rooms and amazing backdrops to come!

Another room to avoid spending too much time in is the flower garden. It’s really dark, so all of our pictures turned out to be (you guessed it) really dark and fuzzy. Maybe take this room as an opportunity to “live in the moment” and put your phone down for a few minutes. Don’t waste your time and effort trying to get a good shot here. Just stop and smell the fake flowers!

Where to Get the Best Boomerangs

Here’s a list of the hottest spots for boomerangs:

  • Chains mini-room  - We’re honestly not sure if there’s anything else to do with the chains besides a boomerang. They’re hanging close together, and the mini-room is not well-lit, so it’s hard to see a person in the photo unless you move the chains out of the way.

  • Confetti dome - Throw and kick confetti around to give you a cool snow globe effect.

  • Ball pit - Tee it up before you climb up to jump into this fun pot of gold (literally and figuratively). The staff will get great boomerangs of you jumping in and throwing balls into the air as you sit in the bit.

  • Confetti angels - Think snow angels, only warmer. There are also tinsel drapes nearby if you’re not in the mood to lay down and make angels.

Fun Pose Inspiration

Get physical and mix it up! Jump, throw things around, get into the music, lay down. It makes for playful photos and makes the experience more fun in the moment!

Use the room to make your usual poses feel fresh. Take shots through other objects or hold the camera at steep angles! The rooms can be small, so this also helps pics feel grander.

Look around at what others are doing and throw your own spin on it or just see that you’re not alone in doing crazy poses for the gram! The upside down room can be intimidating, but it’s fun to have everyone cheer you on as you orchestrate your perfect optical illusion pose!

Miscellaneous Tips

Bring a group of friends and take turns being the photographer. Share a google drive or Dropbox folder of pics when you leave.

Pose against the plain walls when the main attraction of the room is occupied. They make for great photos, too, and most people don’t think to do this, so they’re always available.

If you plan to jump in the ball pit, know that it’s not as comfy to land on as it looks like it should be (but you’re with your friends so it’ll be ok). Also good luck getting out of the pit … it’s a workout.

HAND SANITIZER!! Happy Place is a very popular spot. Every wall you lean on, every ball pit you jump into, and every gigantic sculpture you sit on has presumably been leaned on, jumped into, and sat on by many many people before you. We advise a thorough hand washing promptly after you leave :)

Go to the bathroom before you go! We didn’t see anywhere to go when we were there, and it takes about 1.5 hours to get through the exhibit.
